盧炎: 1930-2008
盧炎，1930 年生於大陸南京。他的幼年曾歷經了人類歷史上於第二次世界大戰後，中 國最混亂與悲殘的時期；先有對日抗戰、南京大屠殺，後有國共內戰。1949 年，盧炎 從顛沛流離的逃難生活中，隨著時代的滾輪把他及家人推向了臺灣。1963 年，師大音 樂系畢業，他踏出了逐夢的第一步；乘上一艘大貨船，費時一個多月渡過了太平洋，才 到達美國。進入了密蘇里州立東北師範學院；他的第一個西方音樂學術殿堂。
1965 年盧炎搬至他心目中最理想的音樂學習聖地―紐約。考入曼尼斯音樂學院學習作 曲長達 7 年。曾受教於猶太籍老師威廉．賽德門（William Sydeman），他在美的第一位 啟蒙老師。1973 年他轉到紐約市立大學，跟隨馬里歐‧大衛朵夫斯基（Mario Davidovsky） 選修了一年作曲和電子音樂。1977 年盧炎又進入美國費城賓州大學音樂研究所，並跟從他 最心儀的國際大師喬治．羅克伯（George Rochberg）與喬治．克蘭姆（George Crumb） 學習作曲；最終完成了他漫長的學徒路。
1979 年，盧炎學成返臺，49 歲的他一直任教於東吳大學音樂系至辭世前。1988 年， 以《四手聯彈鋼琴曲》一首，為他贏得「金鼎獎」1993 年獲第十八屆「國家文藝獎」， 1998 年獲第二屆「國家文化藝術基金會文藝獎」殊榮。2002 年並榮獲東吳大學的 講座教授。2003 年獲「東元科技獎 」。 2009 年以《十方協奏曲》獲選為「金曲獎 」最佳作曲家。
Lu Yen :1930-2008
LU Yen entered the world in 1930, in Nanjing, China, during a chaotic and tragic period of human history. During the Sino-Japanese War and the Civil War in China that wreaked further havoc on the country after World War II, LU Yen and his family were refugees, drifting from place to place. In 1949, they finally escaped the turmoil by moving to Taiwan. After finishing his college studies in Taiwan, LU resolved to follow the biggest dream in his life - learning music composition. In 1963, he took the first big stride towards realizing his dream, and stepped onto the deck of a large, dilapidated cargo ship that was bound for America. After a month-long passage across the Pacific Ocean, LU finally set foot in the New World. Northeast Missouri State Teachers’ College was to be LU’s maiden entry into western music education.
In 1965, LU Yen moved to New York, where he continued his studies at Mannes College of Music, up to 7 years. Under the guidance of his mentor, Professor William Sydeman, LU consummated his dream of becoming a composer with the completion of his first work – The Septet – in 1967. He moved on to the City College of New York in 1973 and studied composition and electronic music with Professor Mario Davidovsky for one year. By pursuing graduate studies in 1977 at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia under the auspices of George Rochberg and George Crumb, LU had fulfilled the dream that inspired him so many years ago.
In 1979, at the age of 49 LU returned to Taiwan and began his lifelong teaching career at Soochow University in Taipei until the last days of his life. In 1988, his Piano Piece for Four Hands, won him the Golden Tripod Award. He was presented with the National Culture and Arts Award in 1993, the National Award for the Arts in 1998 and was honored to be the chair professor at Soochow University since 2002. He won the TECO Technology Award in 2003, and with his Shih Fong Concerto, he was elected as the best composer of the Golden Melody Awards in 2009.
